A small collection of images taken during a trip down the Georgia and Florida coast in February, 2014. We hit several locations we've visited before (Savannah NWR and Harris Hook NWR in Georgia; Merritt Island NWR, Viera Wetlands, Wakodahatchee Wetlands, and Anhinga Trail in Florida), and tried a few new ones (Green Cay, Loxahatchee Wetlands, both in Florida). The weather was quite good, and we saw and shot quite a bit.
I geocoded the images as I have in the past, and the location can be shown by clicking on the small "globe" icon at the bottom left when looking at the full-size images.
The wingtips barely touching the water's surface made this shot for me.

Sandhill Crane Pair
We had visited Viera Wetlands a couple of years ago, and once again found some nesting Sandhill Cranes, on the nest. This pair was quite vocal for a while!

Pied-billed Grebe
We saw quite a few, with this one doing quite a lot of stretching and flapping of its wings.
We were excited to come across this Raptor perched in a tree. I initially identified it as a Northern Harrier, but through the kind attention of Peter May, have now labelled it correctly. The next image shows an actual Northern Harrier. Since we spotted this one in the tree around the same time as the Harrier made several fly-bys, I mistakenly thought it was the same species. Thanks, Peter, for the correction!
There were several fly-bys of this Raptor, affording us a few opportunities to catch it in flight. It took some patience to hang around waiting, but we were eventually rewarded!
We were there the right time of year to get some nice breeding coloring in these birds.

Great Blue Heron Pair Mating
There was quite a lot of activity at Wakodahatchee, incluidng this mating pair of Herons. It's a little hard to see at this size, but the male has its beak firmly grasping the female's neck.

Double-crested Cormorant with Nesting Material
The Cormorants were extremely active building their nests, and were constantly bringing large, leafy branches from nearby trees. I don't know how many frames I shot, but this is one of my favorites.

American Bittern
Despite being in their habitat on multiple occasions, I hadn't been lucky enough to photograph this species until this trip. For the most part, it stayed deeply hidden and camouflaged, but did venture out somewhat on occasion.
One of the few flight shots I have of this Ibis species.

Limpkin
Having very few images of this species, I was glad to find this one perched in some nearby trees early one morning.

Limpkin with Apple Snail
Not being familiar with their feeding habits, I was surprised to see this one carrying and then eating this very large snail. We did some reading, and learned that the Apple Snail is one of its favorite foods.

Purple Gallinule
We often see this beautiful species at the Anhinga Trail, but this one was just pulling and pulling on the vegetation showing here, creating a little different image than usual.
We were on our way out of the Anhinga Trail, when we came across several people shooting something in the grass. As we got closer, we were pleasantly surprised to see this Cormorant trying to eat a fairly large Catfish it had just caught.

Cormorant with Catfish 2
He must have struggled with the Catfish for 15 minutes or more, and eventually got it in the right position, and swallowed it!

Roseate Spoonbill in Flight
This beautiful bird was perching on some bushes nearby, and abruptly took off, giving us a brief opportunity for some flight shots.
